Nursery > English > Expressive_Arts > Art > Opposites – Hot and Cold – Goldilocks and the Three Bears Part 2

Lesson by Cath Rees

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to name things that are hot.
  • To be able to name things that are cold.
  • To be able to use hot or cold colours to create a piece of art.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity is about helping your child to understand hot and cold. It includes talking with your child about keeping safe in relation to hot and cold objects.

There is a short video approximately one minute long to support the learning.

The main activities can be completed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Goldilocks describes Daddy Bear’s porridge as too hot. Can you think of things that are hot?

  • Is the sun hot or cold?
  • Is a cup of tea hot or cold?
  • Why do we need to be careful when we are around hot things?
  • Discuss the importance of being safe whilst near hot things such as a cup of tea, the cooker, fire etc.

Today we are going to find out more about hot and cold and the colours that represent these.

Listen to the song about hot and cold. Can you remember all the things that were hot and all the things that were cold?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Draw pictures using shapes and lines to represent all the hot things on one piece of paper and all the cold things on another piece of paper.

  • Ask them to share their work with you.
  • Can they name what they have drawn on each piece of paper?
  • Adult – Write down what they say next to each picture.

Activity 2

We use colours to represent hot and cold. Blues, greys, white and greens represent cold colours and shades of red, orange and yellow represent hot colours.

  • Now ask your child to choose whether they want to draw a hot or a cold picture.
  • Help your child select the colours they need. They can use crayons, pencils, felt tip pens, paint or collage materials to create a piece of art reflecting hot or cold using the colours have chosen.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can name some things that are hot.

Success criteria #2:  I can name some things that are cold.

Success criteria #3:  I can use hot and cold colours to create a piece of art.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
