Learning Intentions:

  • To retell the story to an adult.
  • To use your imagination to create your own caterpillar picture.

Step 1: Activity overview for parents, carers and pupils

In this activity there are two video clips the first is optional (approximately 20 minutes long) this video encourages your child to carry out different movement as they are told a story. The second is a story video approximately seven minutes to support your child’s learning.

The main activity can be competed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to look at the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. We will start with a warm up activity, then listen to the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’, after you can create your own story.

Now listen and watch this short-animated film about ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.

 

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activities 1

  • Retell the story to someone in your family.

Activity 2

  • Make a picture of your own very hungry caterpillar.
  • You can go to ‘JIT paint’ to make your picture or you could draw your picture using, coloured pencils, felt pens or if you have some paint you might like to paint a picture.

Think about these things when making your picture.

  • Remember to use different colours for the body.
  • What food did your caterpillar eat?
  • Can you add some pictures of the foods your caterpillar ate?

Activity 3

Draw a picture of the butterfly that your caterpillar turned into.

  1. Warm up with ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’.
  2. Listen to the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’.
  3. Retell the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ to a member of your family.
  4. Draw or paint a picture of your own hungry caterpillar.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

 

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can retell the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ to a member of my family.

Success criteria #2:  I can draw a picture of my own hungry caterpillar.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
