Learning Intentions:
- To make a musical instrument
- To listen and join in with the beat of the music
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
Today we are going to listen to some music and join in with a musical instrument that you have made yourself.
There is a short three-minute video.
The main activity can be completed offline.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Today you are going to make a musical shaker out of recyclable material.
You will need:
- An empty plastic bottle
- Some rice, pasta, lentils, dried peas etc.
- Sellotape
To make your shaker
- Put a small amount of either rice, pasta, lentils etc into you bottle.
- Put the lid back on the bottle.
- Seal with sellotape.
- Now decorate your shaker. For example, you could colour in some strips of paper then stick them round your shaker.
- You can make more than one shaker with different materials. Listen to the different sounds they make.
- Is it soft or loud?
- Can you change how loud your shaker is by shaking it gently?
