Lesson by F Davis

Learning Intentions:

  • To make a musical instrument
  • To listen and join in with the beat of the music

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

Today we are going to listen to some music and join in with a musical instrument that you have made yourself.

There is a short three-minute video.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today you are going to make a musical shaker out of recyclable material.

You will need:

  • An empty plastic bottle
  • Some rice, pasta, lentils, dried peas etc.
  • Sellotape

To make your shaker

  1. Put a small amount of either rice, pasta, lentils etc into you bottle.
  2. Put the lid back on the bottle.
  3. Seal with sellotape.
  4. Now decorate your shaker. For example, you could colour in some strips of paper then stick them round your shaker.
  5. You can make more than one shaker with different materials. Listen to the different sounds they make.
  • Is it soft or loud?
  • Can you change how loud your shaker is by shaking it gently?
