Lesson by Jan Folland

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to move in a given direction.
  • To be able to join in with actions in a song.
  • To recognise and name colours.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a short two-minute video song to start.

The main activities can be completed offline.

In this activity you will be encouraging your child to recognise and name different colours.

Resources:

  • cardboard tubes
  • paper cup
  • sticky tape

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start with this warm-up activity. Click on the link below and join in with the actions of the pirate song ‘When I was one…’

  • You might want to play this more than once singing along and joining in the actions.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Colour Treasure Hunt

Before you go on your Colour Treasure Hunt you will need to make yourself a pirate spyglass.

  • You will need a cardboard tube, a paper cup, sticky tape and some things to decorate it with, this could be felt pens, tin foil, glitter or bits of coloured paper. Below are some pictures to give you some ideas.

Spyglass-Ideas

Now you are ready to go on a Colour Treasure Hunt.

Using your spyglass hunt for objects of different colours.

Can you find some things that are:

  • red
  • blue
  • yellow
  • green
  • orange
  • purple
  • brown
  • black
  • white

Look at the objects you have collected.

Sort them into the different colour sets, e.g. all the red objects together.

Talk about the different shades in each set of objects:

  • Which colour do you have the most of? (encourage your child to count the objects by touching each one as they say the number.)
  • Which colour do you have the least of?
  • Were there any colours you couldn’t find?
  • Did you find any other colours that were not in the list?
  • Point to an object and ask your child what colour it is?

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can join in with the movements in the song.

Success criteria #2:  I can name some colours.

Success criteria #3:  I can sort objects into different colour sets.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2 – Role play

You might like to make yourself a pirate hat and an eye patch, make a treasure chest and draw a picture of a parrot.

Then you could play at being a pirate with your toys, going on adventures to find some treasure
