Lesson by Jan Folland

Learning Intentions:

  • To listen and respond to a story
  • To be creative
  • To develop fine motor skills through colouring and using scissors

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In the activity there is a video clip about creatures living on or near the sea and is based on the book called ‘Commotion in The Ocean’ by Giles Andreae. (Approximately six minutes)

The main activity can be completed offline and is aimed at helping your child develop their fine motor skills.

You will need the following resources:

  • Coat hanger
  • Cotton/string/Sellotape
  • Paper or card
  • Crayons, felt pens, paint, glitter, coloured paper etc.
  • Scissors

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by listening to the story ‘Commotion in The Ocean’ by Giles Andreae. Click on the link below.

Talk about the different creatures that you saw.

  • How do they move?
  • Did they all live in the sea?
  • Which one was your favourite?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Make a mobile

  • Decide which creatures from the story you would like on your mobile.
  • Help your child by drawing a simple outline of the creatures they have chosen.
  • Help your child to cut out the creatures encouraging them to do as much as possible.
  • Encourage your child to be creative with their decoration of the creatures. They can use any colours to make patterns, shapes etc.
  • Attach some string or cotton (different lengths), either by sticking with Sellotape or threading through a small hole.
  • Attach the strings to the coat hanger and hang up.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can talk about a story I have heard.

Success criteria #2:  I can use scissors to cut out simple shapes.

Success criteria #3:  I can make a mobile.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
