Lesson by F Davis

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to talk about submarines.
  • To find out if things float or sink.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video (approximately four minutes) for your child to watch.

The activity can be completed offline.

Resources: a selection of different waterproof toys of differing weights.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by watching the video ‘Super Submarines’ by Tony Mitton and Ant Parker on the link below:

  • Where will we find submarines?
  • Would you like to work in a submarine?
  • Do you think a submarine is heavy or light?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: Floating and sinking

  • Collect your waterproof toys and discuss whether you think they will float or sink.
  • In a sink filled with water find out if your predictions/guesses were accurate as you place the toys one by one in the water.
  • Fold a sheet of paper in half and write the words float and sink (get your child to have a go, forming letters/mark making, is part of their development).
  • Draw one object that floats and one that sinks on the correct half of the paper.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can talk about submarines.

Success criteria #2:  I can find out if things float or sink.

Success criteria #3:  I can record my findings.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
