Nursery > English > Maths_Numeracy > Measures and geometry > Colours – Recognise and name colours

Lesson by F Davis

Learning Intentions:

  • To listen to and respond to a story.
  • To recognise and name colours.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

For this activity there is a story video (approximately seven minutes) to listen to together ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ by Drew Daywalt.

The main activity is then completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

First, listen to the story about different coloured crayons.

Discuss the different colours and point out items with that colour.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: Recognising and naming colours

Get your child to collect different items / toys that match the colour that you say, for example, for red they could bring you a red Lego piece / bead

If they bring an object of a different colour tell them what that colour is and go with them to find something with the colour you originally said. This activity is building your child’s knowledge of different colours.

Activity 2: Draw a picture

  • Get your child to choose three colours.
  • Discuss and name the three colours chosen.
  • Draw a picture or pattern using the three colours chosen.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can listen to and follow a story.

Success criteria #2:  I can recognise and name at least three colours.

Success criteria #3:  I know all my colours.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
