Lesson by Cath Rees
Learning Intentions:
- To be able to find objects that are shorter than a daffodil.
- To be able to find objects that are taller than a daffodil.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
In this activity there is a short introductory and a further video clip to support the learning. (Approximately three minutes in total). The main activity can be completed offline.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Begin by watching the video ‘Daffodil Introduction’.
Discuss the language used to describe height. ‘The daffodil is taller than the dandelion’. What else is the daffodil taller than? Discuss.
Who’s the shortest, Mummy or you? How do you know?
Explain that today we are going to look at objects taller or shorter than a daffodil or the object that you have chosen. We are going to make two sets of objects inside/outside. One of your sets will have objects shorter than your daffodil/object and the other set will be of objects that are taller than your daffodil/object.
Listen to the video and join in with the chorus. Is Benjamin Bunny taller or shorter than Larry Lion?
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
- Find objects outside (or inside) that are shorter than your daffodil/object and place them in a set together.
- Now find objects outside (or inside) that are taller than your daffodil/object and place them in set together.
- Choose one object from both your tall set and your short set as well as your daffodil/object and order from the tallest to the shortest. You should have three objects to order. This can be repeated using different objects from each set.
- Challenge: Can you find an object that is exactly the same height as your daffodil/object?
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can find something taller than a daffodil.
Success criteria #2: I can find something shorter than a daffodil.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
