Nursery > English > Maths_Numeracy > Measures and geometry > Shape -2D shapes – Recognising, naming and completing patterns

Lesson by Cath Rees

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to recognise and name 2D shapes.
  • To be able to find the next shape in a simple pattern.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

Today’s activity is to be completed using online games.  These can be completed on different days. Children may need some support when using ICT but allow them to make their own choices when completing the activities.

We will be learning about 2D shapes (two dimensional shapes) but we will only focus on the four main shapes:

  • Circles
  • Squares
  • Triangles
  • Rectangles

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to learn about 2D shapes. A 2D shape is flat (put your hands together so that they are flat to show this) 3D shapes are fat (place the tips of your fingers together to make the shape of a ball). Begin by reading/listening to the online factual book ‘Look and find the shapes’

Can you name all the 2D shapes?

Once you have read the story and practised recognising and naming each shape, listen to the ‘Shape song’ and join in.

Play the song again and talk about each shape.

  • How many sides does a square have?
  • How many sides does a triangle have?
  • How many sides does a circle have?
  • What is the difference between a square and a rectangle? (A square has 4 sides that are the same length, a rectangle has 4 sides, but two sides are short and two are long).

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Online sort the shape game

Begin by sorting the 2D shapes correctly by playing the online game.

Can you name each shape and move it to the correct shape monster?

Allow children to have a go independently. Let them make mistakes and correct themselves when sorting the shapes. Stop when you feel they have had enough.

Can you name and sort the shapes correctly?

Activity 2 – Online Shape patterns

Look at the shapes on each carriage of the train.

Can you see they make a pattern?

Can you click on the 2D shape that would come next in the pattern?

Allow children to choose the next shape by themselves. Again, let them make mistakes and correct themselves if they need to.

Click on Level 1 to complete the shape patterns

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can recognise and name 2D shapes.

Success criteria #2:  I can find the next shape in a simple pattern.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 3 – Offline shape hunt

Go on a shape hunt around the house or outside.

  • Can you see any shapes?
  • What shape is a window? A plate etc.?

Take pictures of the shapes you have found and create a pic collage for each shape. If you haven’t already got the pic collage app you can download the free version.

Children will need to be supported to complete these activities.

Step 6: Upload your work
