Learning Intentions:

  • To recognise the number 8.
  • To be able to count reliably to 8.
  • To explore simple subtraction.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This week is all about the number eight.

There is an instructional video (approximately six minutes long) that introduces the learning for the week and includes the first activity.

There is also a short audio song for your child to listen to as part of the first day’s activity and a further short video clip (approximately two minutes) to support activity four.

It is recommended that each activity is completed on different days during the week.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity Activity 1 –  Linked to Miss Davies’ video above.

  • Complete the number 8 subtraction challenge using 8 of your favourite toys or sweets.

Activity 2  

Look at the picture ‘Eight Little Octopi’ below.

Can you find:

  • The numeral for eight?
  • The word eight?
  • The Numicon shape for eight? What colour is it?
  • The number on the number line? Describe where it is-after 7/before 9.
  • Count forwards and backwards from 1-8 and 8-1.
  • Show 0 on fingers, 5 on fingers and 8 on fingers. Talk about how 5 and 3 make 8

Activity 3

 Look at the picture above of eight little octopi

  • How many can you see? Touch each one as you count them and show on fingers.
  • Are any of them exactly the same?
  • How many legs does each octopus have?
  • How many would there be if 1 swam away? If 2 swam away? (subtractions)
  • Count out 8 toys or small objects. Can you order them by size starting with the smallest?

Go on a number hunt and see how many number 8s you can spot.

Practise writing number 8 using different materials. Try writing it with:

  • Ribbons or scarves
  • Outside in sand
  • Sticks in soil
  • Chalk
  • Water and a paint brush

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
