Nursery > English > Maths_Numeracy > Numbers and algebra > Number – Use number facts to 5

Lesson by Lisa Davies

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to find different ways of making five using two sets of natural materials.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video approximately two minutes long to support the learning. Although the activity refers to being outdoors it is just as easy to be completed indoors. For this activity collect some leaves, sticks and stones. If you don’t have a garden you could use objects around your house.

The activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Can you count to 5? Follow the link below to watch the video and sing along to make 5.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • Count out five objects that are the same using natural materials or household objects / Lego etc.
  • How many different ways can you find to make 5? For example, three sticks and two stones would make five in total.
  • If you have chalk you can practise writing the number sentence or you can use a piece of paper, for example: 4+1 = 5. Repeat this and see how many different ways you can make 5.
  • Introduce the term ‘switcher’. Use the objects to model that if 3+2= 5 then 2+3=5. They can use the objects to practise this.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:Success criteria #1:  I can make five using two sets.

Success criteria #2:  I understand how to switch the numbers around to make five.

Success criteria #3:  I can write out the sums to make five using two sets of numbers.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2  Once your child is confident with numbers to 5, encourage them to make 10. How many different ways can you find to make 10?
