Lesson by F Davis
Learning Intentions:
- To count backwards from 10.
- To begin to understand simple subtraction.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
There is a song video (approximately five minutes).Resources: start with five small objects, such as toy cars, counters etc.
The activity focuses on building up your child’s knowledge of subtraction. (Please start with five objects until your child is confident and then build up to ten).
The main activity can be completed offline.
This activity is suitable to be revisited on a daily basis, supporting and consolidating your child’s number knowledge.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
This activity is about counting backwards and building up understanding of simple subtraction and number bonds.
Start by joining in with the song on the link below:
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
- Start with five small objects, count together from 1 to 5 and then backwards 5 to 1.
- Take one or two objects away and ask how many are left? Count together to check.
- Repeat this activity a few times taking away a different number of objects each time.
- Complete this activity in short bursts daily. When your child is confident with working with numbers 1 to 5, add some more objects and complete the activity.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can count forwards and backwards.
Success criteria #2: I can work out simple subtractions.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
