Lesson by Leah Thomas

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to make a prediction.
  • To experiment with floating and sinking.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity will not require access to online content; it will be practical and can be done in or outdoors.

For this activity you will need:

Waterproof toys and objects of varying weight and materials

Large bowl / sink or bath

Water

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This is a floating and sinking activity with everyday objects, that will encourage your child to think about what might happen and then test to see if their guess was right.

Collect some waterproof objects with your child to test if they float or sink. You can use a bowl /sink or enjoy this game at bath time.

Questions to ask during the activity:

  • What can you tell me about this object?
  • Do you think it will sink or float?
  • Can you guess what might happen to it?
  • What can you see?
  • What has happened?
  • Which is the heaviest/lightest?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • Choose an object.
  • Ask your child to guess if they think it will sink or float before placing it in the water.
  • Let your child place the object in the water and discuss if their prediction was right. Did it float or sink?
  • Repeat with the next object.
  • Sort the objects into two group one for float and one for sink.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make a sensible prediction.

Success criteria #2:  I can test my prediction about floating and sinking.

Success criteria #3:  I can sort objects in to two groups.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
