Learning Intentions:
- To be able to count accurately from 1 to 10.
- To make a pattern.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
In this activity there are two short videos approximately three minutes in total. The main activities can be completed offline but will need some adult support.
- Resources
- Smarties or skittles
- Paper plate (white)
- Warm water
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Today you are going to be exploring numbers and patterns using smarties or skittles. It is important when asking your child to count that they touch the objects as they count. Many children can count out aloud but do not always count accurately. The first activity is about one to one correspondence.
Start by watching ‘Spot counting from 1 to 10’ by Eric Hill click the link below.
Talk with your child about how many animals they saw for example
- How many cows?
- How many piglets?
- How many horses?
- How many bees? Etc.
- Count together from 1 to 10.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
You will need up to 10 smarties or skittles. Various colours.
- Ask your child to separate the sweets into different colours
- Now get your child to count how many red sweets they have making sure they touch each sweet as they count it.
- Repeat for other colours e.g. how many green, yellow etc
Activity 2
- Using the smarties or skittles ask your child to make a pattern
- Can they explain their pattern e.g. red, green, red, green or they may answer whilst pointing to the sweets one two three, one two three.
Activity 3
Look at the clip below to see how you can make a water pattern.
- Get your child to arrange some of the smarties or skittles on a white paper plate.
- Ask them what they think will happen when you add some water?
- Now gently pour some warm (NOT hot) water into the centre of the plate just enough to reach the sweets around the edge.
- Now watch your pattern grow.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can count accurately from 1 to 10.
Success criteria #2: I can make patterns
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
Step 5: Upload your work
