Lesson by Cath Rees

Learning Intentions:

  • To make a bear snack using ingredients I have at home.
  • To use different foods to represent different features of a bear’s face.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This is a practical activity where your child can creatively make their own bear snack based on the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In the video introduction you will see the teacher using bread, peanut butter, a banana and some mini smarties. You may wish to use porridge and some fruit or just use fruit. There is also a short video giving some ideas for different snacks you could make.

This is an open activity where you can use the ingredients you want to create a bear snack.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Begin by listening to the animated story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. If you have already listened to this story in a previous activity then you do not need to watch it again unless you wish to.

Today we are going to make a snack that looks like a bear for you to eat. We can use different foods together to make different images. Look at the pictures in the book ‘Funny Food’  by Phoebe McGuffee to find out how you can create different images from food. Click on the button below.

Funny Food

Today, we are going to use foods that we have in our house to make a bear snack.

Watch the video introduction below and discuss.

  • Which ingredients did the teacher use?
  • What did she do first?
  • What would you like to use to make your bear snack?
  • What will you use to represent the bear’s eyes/ ears / nose / mouth?

Before children start handling the foods talk about health and safety –

  • Why do we need to wash our hands?
  • Being safe when using hot ingredients or sharp equipment.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity

Making a bear snack –

  • Collect the foods that you want to use and discuss how you will put them together to make a bear.
  • Children to then combine their ingredients by chopping, spreading and placing the different foods to make a bear.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make a bear snack.

Success criteria #2:  I can use different foods to represent different features of a bear’s face.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
