Lesson by Leah Thomas

Learning Intentions:

  • To learn a counting poem.
  • To recognise and name colours.
  • To develop an understanding of first, second, third, fourth and fifth.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity, you will be sharing a short poem with your child and encouraging them to join in.

There is a short video (approximately one minute long) and a short poem to read online to help support your child’s learning.

The main activities can be completed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to use a poem to help us to recognise and name some colours.

Let’s start with a song about flowers and colours. See if you can join in. Click on the link below.

Sing a song of flowers.

Here is a short poem about flowers it is called ‘Five Little Flowers’. Read this poem to your child. You might want to read the poem a couple of times encouraging your child to join in.

Talk to your child about the poem. This is to help to extend their vocabulary and help them recognises patterns in language. The following questions may help you.

  • Ask them if they can hear the rhyming words? e.g. row/know, be/sea, fellow/yellow, bright/delight.
  • What colours are the flowers in the poem?
  • Can they remember all the colours?
  • Talk about the words first, second, third, fourth, fifth to help your child understand what these words mean. e.g. what colour was the first flower in the poem?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Paint or draw a picture of the five little flowers in the poem.

Encourage your child to use the colours used in the poem.

Activity 2 – Flower sun catcher mobile. Adult support will be needed for this activity.

For this activity, you will need the following resources:

  • Two paper plates (or card/paper and cut into circles) with the centre cut out by an adult.
  • Scissors
  • Transparent contact paper (or cling film and glue)
  • Flower petals and leaves (these can be from daisies, dandelions, blades of grass etc.)

If you do not have access to flowers or leaves you could cut out some small shapes of coloured paper for them to use instead.

  • Markers, pencils, pens
  • Hole punch
  • String

Now watch the video below for instructions on how to make your flower sun catcher.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can say the counting poem, ‘Five little flowers’.

Success criteria #2:  I can recognise and name some colours.

Success criteria #3:  I know what first, second, third, fourth and fifth means.
