Learning Intentions:
- To follow instructions for simple movements.
- To move in given directions.
- To make whole, half and quarter turns.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
There are two video clips, one is a story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister (approximately 5 minutes). The other introduces positional and directional language (approximately 3 minutes). The main activity can be completed offline and repeated several times during the week.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Listen to the story ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister. Click on the link below
Now watch the video below to introduce positional and directional language.
I hope you joined in with moving in different directions and saying the words as this will help you with the main activity.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 Requires some adult support.
- Draw a picture of a Rainbow Fish. Remember the Rainbow Fish has lots of coloured scales. You might like to add some glitter if you have some.
- Cut out your Rainbow Fish.
Now you are ready to play the game ‘Rainbow Fish Says’ (same rules as the game Simon says) focusing on the directions from the video.
Give various instructions to your child to copy, for example,
- Rainbow Fish says go forward four steps
- Rainbow Fish says go left two steps
- Turn right, etc.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can follow instructions to move in different ways.
Success criteria #2: I can move in different directions.
Success criteria #3: I can make simple turns.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
Activity 2 – Positional language song
