Lesson by Cath Rees

Learning Intentions:

  • To use my imagination to create a picture of Jesus.
  • To be able to describe what I think Jesus looked like.
  • To being to use initial letter sounds to help me write words.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity is part of the religious education curriculum.

Today’s main activity can either be completed offline.

There is a short introductory video approximately two minutes long and a short PowerPoint to be view online.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Watch the short video below in which a young narrator describes what Jesus might have looked like and what he could have worn while acknowledging that no one really knows.

Talk to your child about the video.

  • What do you think he looked like?
  • What colour hair do you think he had?
  • Do you think he had long or short hair?
  • Do you think he had a beard?

Explain that nobody knows exactly what he looked like because he lived on earth such a very long time ago.

Now have a look at the PowerPoint below.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Draw a picture of what you think Jesus looked like.

Today we are going to use our imagination to create a picture of what we think Jesus looked like.

You could use:

  • Natural materials outside
  • Collage materials indoors
  • Paper and colouring pencils, crayons or felts

Choose what you would like to use to create your picture.

Collect the materials you need and create your picture.

Now write some words to describe your picture. E.g. long hair, brown eyes, sandals etc.

Allow your child to have a go at writing about their picture using words and phrases. E.g. brown eyes, long hair etc. Don’t worry about spelling, just let them have a go and ask them once they have finished to share what they have written with you.

Please remember that many children will still be mark making and therefore labelling of the picture might just be initial letter sounds. Encourage your child to say the word aloud and then try to write the letters that match the sounds in the words.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can use my imagination to create a picture of Jesus.

Success criteria #2:  I can describe what I think Jesus looked like.

Success criteria #3:  I can use initial letter sounds to help me write my words.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2

Create a recording of you describing what you think Jesus looked like using adjectives (describing words). E.g. Jesus had long hair. You could record using the video facility on a phone or tablet or you could use the recording facility on hwb.
