Lesson by J Hinds

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to count to seven.
  • To know what a caterpillar and butterfly are.
  • To be able to recite the days of the week.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video story, approximately six minutes long to support the learning.

The main activities can be completed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

What happens to ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle after he has had a very big feast? This is a great story to get young children involved in learning about the days of the week, counting and the lifecycle of a butterfly.

Start by watching the story on the link below:

Talk about the story:

  • Did you enjoy the story?
  • What was your favourite part of the story? Why?
  • Can you remember the fruits he ate?
  • Can you remember the order?
  • Can you remember how many of each fruit he ate?

You will notice that the story happens over time. Ask a grown up to help you to write the days of the week on pieces of paper and put them in the correct order starting with Sunday.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Counting

  • Can you count to seven?
  • Write down the numbers you know.

 Activity 2

Either draw the caterpillar or butterfly and try and write the first letter of their name (if you can try to write the name in full)

Activity 3 – Days of the week

  • Start on Sunday and recite the days of the week with a family member.
  • How many days are there?
  • Choose one day and try to write it and draw something you do on that day

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can count to seven.

Success criteria #2:  I know what a caterpillar and butterfly are.

Success criteria #3:  I can recite the days of the week.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
