Lesson by Leah Thomas

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to recall information from a story.
  • To be able to talk about clothes you wear for different types of weather.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

Today’s activity is aimed toward extending your child’s comprehension and ability to recall information from a story. Use questioning to expand your child’s thoughts and opinions and allow them to express their ideas through a craft activity linked to the story. This activity will require access to online content to watch a story (approximately eight minutes).

Additional resources to collect for the second part of the activity:

  • Paper/card
  • Colours, pens, crayons

Optional decorating resources (glitter, sequins, cotton wool etc.)

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Begin the activity by watching the story of ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler or if you have the book you could read it to your child.

Here are some question that you might like to ask your child.

  • What is the giant’s name?
  • After the giant leaves the dress shop, who did he meet?
  • What piece of clothing did the goat need?
  • Whose house had burned down?
  • Who needed the giant’s belt?
  • What did the fox need?
  • When the giant goes back to the dress shop, what happens?
  • What is in the bag that he finds?
  • What did the animals give the giant?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Talk about some clothes that the giant could wear for different types of weather.

  • Draw a picture of a giant wearing clothes suitable for either a sunny day, rainy day or a snowy day.

Activity 2

Think about all of the things the giant does to help the different animals throughout the story and see what you could do today to help somebody.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can talk about a story I have listened to.

Success criteria #2:  I can answer ‘who’ and ‘what’ questions about a story I have listened to.

Success criteria #3:  I can talk about clothes that you can wear for different types of weather.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
