Lesson by Leanne Wainwright

Learning Intentions:

  • To recognise letter sounds.
  • To use phonics to sound out words.
  • To be able to blend initial letter sounds.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

Children learn to recognise how sounds are represented by letters (grapheme) and identify letter sounds (phoneme). Phonics is essential for children to become successful readers, spellers and writers. Jigsaw jumble is a visually fun activity that will help support and develop letter recognition, letter sounds and blending through drawing and creating their own picture jigsaws.

There is a short two-minute video to watch, that introduces letter recognition and blending. Your child can watch, listen and join in with the video to practise their blending and reading skills.

The main activity has a four-page instruction PowerPoint; once this has been read the rest of the activity can be completed offline.

Resources: paper, colouring pencils, magazine pictures scissors and writing pencil.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Let’s start by watching a short video to help you to practise your letter sounds.  Click below.

I hope you joined in with sounding out the letters and saying the words as this will help you with the activity.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1- Jigsaw jumble

Requires some adult support.

Follow the instructions below to start making your own jigsaw jumbles.

Now that you have made your jigsaws, you are ready to play.

Choose one of the piles that you have made and sort the letters to correctly spell the word. Say the word aloud.

Continue in the same way for all of your jigsaws.

When your child is confident with the word in the jigsaws that you have made you can choose some new words and make some more.

You can use this activity daily for short bursts of learning.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can recognise letter sounds in words.

Success criteria #2:  I can use my phonics to sound out words.

Success criteria #3:  I can spell some simple words.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Upload your work
