Learning Intentions:
- To recognise words that rhyme.
- To recognise sounds in words.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
Rhyme and repetition are so important. They help children begin to recognise patterns in words and identify between different sounds. Rainbow rhymes is a visually fun activity that will support your child in developing their listening, oracy and word play skills through singing, craft and drawing.
There is a fun introductory video for you child to listen to and join in with, which will last three minutes, as well as some example rainbow rhyming word families for you to choose from.
The main activities can be completed offline. There are two main activities which can be completed on different days.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Let’s get moving and grooving, singing and rhyming. Listen to the action song below.
Did you find all the words that rhyme?
Listen to the song again and this time see if you can join in with the actions and find the words that rhyme.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1- Rainbow rhymes
Requires some adult support
- Have a look at the rainbow rhyme word families. Choose a rhyme family to start.
- Choose four rhyme words from the rhyme family and then choose three words that do not rhyme.
- Play rhyme clap with your child: say a pair of words to your child, for example, cat and dog, ask your child to clap if they rhyme, if they do not rhyme it’s thumbs down; repeat this with a few words from the rainbow rhyme word families (you can add funny voices or sing the words to encourage attention).
Use the rainbow rhyme word families and follow the instructions below to start making your own rainbow rhymes.
Activity 2 – Rhyme hunt
Can you be a rhyme spy?
- Look around your house or garden for two objects that rhyme (box and socks…cat and hat)
- Take pictures of your objects and create a rhyme collage on a piece of paper
- Can you write a label for your objects?
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can match simple rhyme words.
Success criteria #2: I can hear beginning, middle and end sounds in simple words.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
Activity 3- Rhyme snap cards
You will need:
- Plain paper
- Drawing/coloured pencils
Make your own rhyme snap cards.
Use the rainbow rhyme families to draw pictures of objects that do, and do not rhyme.
You can write the names of the objects on your snap cards if you like.
