Lesson by A Davy

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to follow a story.
  • To talk about a story.
  • To know some rhyming words.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a story video, approximately four minutes.

There is a sheet that you can download and print if you have access to a printer or you can copy it onto paper for your child to use.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by watching the story ‘Paula the Vet’ by Julia Donaldson on the link below:

Do you have a pet? If you do, what is your pet?

How many animals can you remember that needed to visit the vet in the story?

What was the pet that arrived at the vet at the end of the story?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: Rhyming words

Can you come up with words that rhyme with animals on the sheet below? The rhyming words don’t have to be animals just words that have the same sound.

Using the sheet below or copy the names of animals onto paper and see how many words that you can come up with, that sound like that animal.

Which animal could you find the most rhyming words for?

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can follow a story.

Success criteria #2:  I can talk about a story.
