Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
This activity there are two video clips approximately six minutes in total. There is also a one page slide to look at.
You will need a torch for the main activity. All the activities can be competed offline and on different days.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
In this activity, your child will start to develop their understanding of how shadows are made.
Let’s start by listening to a story ‘The day I met my shadow’ by Melissa Brun
Talk with your child about the story.
- Have they noticed that their own shadow changes shape?
Now watch this short video on how to make hand shadows.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – Hand shadows Adult support required.
Think about the hand shadows that the children made in the video above.
- Using a torch, what hand shadows can you make?
- Ask an adult to hold the torch for you and shine it towards a wall. Hold your hands in front of the torch and see what shapes you can make?
- Can you make a butterfly, a rabbit, a dog?
- Make up a story to go with your hand shadows?
Activity 2 – Action poem Adult support required
Look at the poem below
- Go outside on a sunny day as an adult reads the poem to you can you make your shadow do all the actions in the poem.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can listen and respond to a story.
