  • To follow and discuss a story.
  • Write a simple spell.
  • To make a wand.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video approximately seven minutes long.

Resources for this activity:

Selection of craft materials such as natural objects e.g. sticks, leaves, wool or object/materials suitable for making a wand.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Begin by listening to the story ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson

Discuss the story

  • What animals went on the broom?
  • What happened to the broom?
  • Who did they meet?
  • What did the witch use to make a spell?
  • Can you describe the new broom?
  • What did you think of the witch’s spell?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Make a wand

  • Look at the pictures below to get some ideas for making a wand.
  • Collect the resources you need.
  • Make a new wand.

Activity 2 – Create your own spell.

The Witch in the story used a cauldron and different items to help with her spell ‘iggety, ziggety, zaggety, ZOOM!’  To make a brand new broom.

  • What words would you use to make a spell for a new broom?
  • What would your new broom look like?
  • Draw a picture of your broom and write your spell.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can answer questions about a story I have listened to.

Success criteria #2:  I can write a spell.

Success criteria #3:  I can make a wand.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
