Learning Intentions:

  • To listen and respond to a story.
  • To follow instructions.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a story video to watch. (Approximately six minutes.) There is a one-page word document with instructions for the growing activity.

The activities can be completed offline.

Resources:

  • Carrot with a few leaves
  • Shallow dish
  • Cotton wool balls, pads or kitchen roll

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by listening to the story about ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’ written by Vivian French.

After listening to the story talk about:

  • What happened in the story?
  • What did Oliver like eating?
  • Which food is your favourite?
  • What did grandad grow in his garden?
  • What would you like to grow if you had a garden like grandad’s?
  • Did Oliver still like chips at the end of the story? What else did he like?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • For each day of the week draw a different vegetable that you might like to eat.
  • Label your picture with the name of the vegetable and the day of the week.

Activity 2 – Adult support

  • Read through the instructions on how to grow your own carrot top.
  • Now follow the instructions.
  • How tall do you think it will grow?
  • Check on your carrot top each day and watch it grow.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
