Lesson by F Davies

Learning Intentions:

  • To know my initial sounds.
  • To know the initial sound of everyday objects and toys.
  • To know words that start with the same initial sound.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video (approximately five minutes).  There is one activity sheet that can be downloaded and printed or copied onto paper.

Resources: everyday objects as seen in the video.

The main activities can be completed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by watching the video on initial sounds on the link below:

Talk about initial sounds and point to object, say the word and get your child to say the initial sound for example, television the initial sound is ‘t’.

Talk about other objects around the home.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity: Say the initial sound

  • Collect the small resources as in the video.
  • Choose an object then get your child to say the initial sound.
  • Repeat with the other objects.

Activity 2: Words with the same initial sound

Using the template (printed or copied) below get your child to write other words that start with the same initial sounds for example, in the box next to fox your child could attempt to write frog, fire, fence etc.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I know my initial sounds.

Success criteria #2:  I know the initial sound of everyday objects.
