Lesson by A Davy
Learning Intentions:
- To develop the use of phonics.
- To develop word association and spelling.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
This activity will require adult support. There is a short video song (approximately two minutes) and one sheet word document to print or copy. There are two activities which can be completed on different days. It is beneficial to revisit words that they recognise and to build up word recognition.
Resources: paper, scissors, glue or Sellotape, pencil, crayons etc.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Start this activity by watching and joining in the rhyming song
This activity is about building a strong word wall for Humpty Dumpty to sit on.
See how many words you can recognise on the bricks on the document below.
Did you notice how the words on each brick rhyme?
Can you think of some other rhyming words?
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1: Building a word wall
- Start by cutting out/making some rhyming word wall bricks. Start with some of the words your child can recognise and say easily. Then add one or two more word bricks with words your child is not yet secure with.
- Get them to say the rhyming words on the bricks as they build the wall. If they get both words on the brick right they place it down to start the wall. If they can’t remember the word, help them to sound it out and say the word. Then place it back in the pile of bricks so they can have another go.
- Once your child is able to say all the rhyming words on the bricks you can make some new ones to add to your wall.
- This is a game that you can play for five minutes everyday to develop sight vocabulary and use of phonics.
Activity 2: Using rhyming words to make sentences
- Let your child pick a brick from the rhyming word wall.
- Ask them to make a simple sentence using the two words, for example, ‘The goat has a red coat.’
- Then encourage them to write their sentence down making sure that the rhyming words are spelt correctly; they can use their phonics/best guess for other words.
- Check that you have remembered your capital letters and full stops.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can recognise some rhyming words.
Success criteria #2: I can create a word wall.
Success criteria #3: I can write some simple sentences with rhyming words.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
