  • To develop knowledge of some prepositions.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video (approximately five minutes) to support your child’s learning. The main activity can be completed offline.

This activity can be repeated on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by listening and joining in with the actions to, ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen on the link below:

Discuss the story:

  • Where did they go?
  • What actions did they use?

Meaning of prepositions for young children:

Prepositions usually describe the position of something and the way it is done for example, teddy is under the table, on the table or behind the television.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: ‘Bear hunt’

  • Choose a favourite teddy or toy and go on a ‘bear hunt’ around your home and/or garden.

Using prepositions get your child to place their teddy / toy in that position, for example:

  • Put teddy / toy under the table.
  • Put teddy / toy on top of the kitchen top.
  • Take teddy / toy up the stairs.
  • Put teddy / toy behind the chair.
  • Put teddy / toy in a box.
  • Put teddy / toy in front of the door etc.

Repeat this activity so that your child becomes familiar and confident with prepositions and positional language.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can follow and join in with a story.

Success criteria #2:  I know some prepositions.

Success criteria #3:  I can show my understanding of some prepositions.
