Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
A fabulously fun activity that will have your child springing about with excitement over 2D shapes. Today you will be singing and dancing along with the 2D shape characters and creating your own crafty 2D shape scarecrow.
There is a short two minute energetic video, this video is a great way to start the activity with a smile and get your child excited about shapes. There are also two additional short videos to support the activities.
There are two main activities that can be completed on different days.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Shapes, shapes and more shapes. They are everywhere. Today we are going to be learning all about 2D shapes by singing, dancing and getting crafty. Where are my shape spies? Have a sneaky peek at the video …. what shapes can you see?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – 2D shape scarecrow

Oh no! The farmer’s crops are ruined. Let’s make a scarecrow to help him.
This activity requires some adult supervision.
Follow the instructions below to make your own 2D shape scarecrow. You can use as many 2D shapes as you like.
- What shapes have you used?
- How many of each shape have you used?
Activity 2 – Making 2D shapes
You will need:
A flat baking tray and shaving foam spread out inside the baking tray (alternatives: glitter, paint)
Which 2D shape is your favourite? Listen to the song below
- Can you join in and use your fantastic finger to trace the shapes in the air?
On your baking tray can you trace, with your finger, a 2D shape in the shaving foam?
- How many 2D shapes can you make in the shaving foam?
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can name some 2D shapes.
Success criteria #2: I can make a 2D shape scarecrow picture.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
Activity 3– 2D shape puppets
- Can you create your own 2D shape puppet family?
- With the help of an adult can you use the puppets to make up your own 2D shape song?
