Lesson by F Davis

Learning Intentions:

  • To start recognising 2D shapes.
  • To start recognising the different qualities of 2D shapes.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

There is a song video to watch (approximately four minutes), ‘Shapes Song for Kids’ by the Sleeping Walrus. The main activity can be completed offline.

It will be helpful to your child to repeat this activity over several days in short bursts.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This activity builds up knowledge of 2D shapes.

Begin by watching and joining in with the video “Shapes Song” below:

Discuss the common 2D shapes with your child:

  • names of the shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle.
  • qualities of the shapes, for example, how many sides?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: 2D shape hunt

Look for 2D shapes around the house and /or garden.

Talk about the shapes you have found and the qualities that make that object a certain shape, for example, the television is a rectangle, it has four sides with two of the two sides equal in length or the clock is a circle shape with one curved line.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can recognise 2D shapes

Success criteria #2:  I can recognise different qualities of 2D shapes.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
