Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to understand a story.
  • To be able to know the difference between big and small.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video, approximately three minutes, to support your child’s learning.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Start by listening to the story, ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell, on the link below:

Talk about all the animals in the story, can you remember:

  • Which animal was too big?
  • Which animal was too tall?
  • Which animal was too fierce?
  • Which animal was too grumpy?
  • Which animal was too scary?
  • Which animal was too naughty?
  • Which animal was too jumpy?
  • Which animal was perfect?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Big and small animals

  • Fold a piece of paper (no smaller than A4) in half and get your child to write ‘big’ on one half and ‘small’ on the other half.
  • Draw big animals on one half and small animals on the other half.
  • Have a go at spelling the names of some of the animals you have drawn.

 Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can understand what a story is about.

Success criteria #2:  I know the difference between big and small.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
