Lesson by Cath Rees

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to sort objects into colour sets.
  • To find coloured items on an indoor/outdoor hunt.
  • To copy a coloured pattern.
  • To continue a coloured pattern

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there are two videos to watch and listen to, approximately seven minutes in total to support the learning.

The activities can be completed offline and on different days.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Listen to the story ‘The Colour Monster’ by Anna Llenas on the link below:  and discuss.

Why is the Colour Monster all mixed up and very confused?

What colour/s are you feeling today? Why?

The activity is about helping ‘The Colour Monster’ by sorting all the mixed up colours into sets.

Watch the video about colours.

What is your favourite colour?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Begin by collecting a group of coloured objects that you have around the house. This can be a group of indoor or outdoor objects.

Can you sort the objects into coloured sets? Place all the red objects in one set, all the green objects in another set etc.

Activity 2

Use your coloured objects to make a coloured pattern (red, blue, green, red, blue, green). Children to then have a go at copying your pattern. Can they keep the pattern going by adding to it?

Activity 3

Play ‘I spy with my little eye something with the colour blue’. Children to then name all the blue objects they can see until they guess correctly. Repeat with a different colour, taking turns.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can sort objects into colour sets.

Success criteria #2:  I can find coloured items.

Success criteria #3:  I can copy and continue a coloured pattern.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
