Learning Intentions:
- To work with numbers 1 to 10
- To design and create a game.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
This activity will need adult support.
There is a short introductory video (approximately one minute) that is essential to watch before completing the practical activity.
The main activity can be complete offline.
Resources:
Cardboard box – like in the video
Cardboard tubes cut into ten smaller sections – like in the video
Scissors
Felt pen
Glue / Sellotape
A small ball shaped object that will roll through the tubes
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Today we are going to make a fun maths game.
While watching the video below look careful at how they have placed the cardboard tubes.
Note that they are not all facing the same way and the numbers are not in order. You will be making your own game as part of this activity.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – Adult support will be needed.
Collect your resources together:
Cardboard box – like in the video
Cardboard tubes cut into ten smaller sections – like in the video
Scissors
Felt pen
Glue / Sellotape
A small ball shaped object that will roll through the tubes
Plan and make your game
- Cut the cardboard tubes into ten smaller pieces
- Write a numbers from 1 to 10 on each tube
- Set the tubes out in the cardboard box with the numbers showing
- Check that yours looks like the one in the video before you stick your cardboard tubes down.
Activity 2 – play the game
Practice rolling your ball around and through the tubes.
Can you get your ball to roll through all the even numbers 2, 4, 6, 8, 10?
Can you get your ball to go through all the odd numbers 1,3,5,7,9?
Can you get your ball to go through the answer to these number sentences?
- 2+ 1 =
- 2+2 =
- 4+3 =
- 5+5 =
You can make up more of your own if you want to.
Challenge: can you take the ball through all the numbers from 1 to 10 in order?
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can work with numbers 1 to 10.
Success criteria #2: I can design and create a game.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
