Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to identify colours.
  • To be able to mix colours together to create new colours.
  • To be able to observe and discuss.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is an online story approximately two minutes to support the learning.  Adult support needed.

Resources needed:

  • Plastic cups/ glasses of equal size (maximum of 6)
  • Food colourings (primary colours : red, yellow, blue)
  • Water
  • White paper towels

The activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Have you ever seen water walk?

Today we are going to explore mixing colours and see if we can make them walk. This will be done through a science experience.

Start by watching a short story ‘Mouse Paint’ by Ellen Stoll Walsh on the link below.

  • What colours did you find in the story?
  • Discuss what mouse did to all the colours, what happened to the colours?
  • What colours would you like to mix together

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity Let’s get experimenting.

Your challenge is to follow the instructions below to mix the colours and see if you can make the water walk.

Activity 1 – Walking water experiment

  • Read through the ‘walking water experiment’ instructions sheet.
  • Decide which colours you would like to mix.
  • Carry out the experiment with a grown up.
  • After an hour – What do you notice
  • Discuss what has happened with a grown up.
  • Draw a picture and label your completed experiment.
  • Write a short sentence describing what you have seen.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can identify some colours.

Success criteria #2:  I can mix colours.

Success criteria #3:  I can make some observations.
