Y1 > English > Expressive_Arts > Art > Patterns – Patterns everywhere

Lesson by Debbie Davies

Learning Intentions:

  • To learn about the many different patterns in our environment.
  • To learn what are patterns and how they are created?

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity will enable children to identify patterns in their home environment. These may be found indoors or outdoors. There is a short video to watch (approximately two minutes) to support the learning.

The main activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Have you ever seen a pattern? Maybe you have made one of your own using shapes or paint. Patterns are all around us and can be made using lots of different shapes, colours and lines.

Click on the link below to see some patterns.

Talk about the patterns you saw in the video:

  • Which ones did you like and why?
  • Which ones didn’t you like and why?
  • Were all the patterns the same?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Look around your home to see if you can find some patterns.

You may find these on walls, pots, toys, clothes, tiles, towels etc.

  • Talk to a family member about the patterns you found.
  • What is making the pattern?
  • What colours, shapes and lines can you see?
  • Does it repeat?

Look for items around your home to make your own pattern. You could use Lego, buttons, shapes, leaves, plants, sticks or stones.

 Activity 2

Draw or paint a pattern that you have found or made today.

  • Think about the colours, shapes and lines that you will use.
  • Does it repeat?

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I know what a pattern is.

Success criteria #2:  I can find patterns in my home.

Success criteria #3:  I can make and draw patterns.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
