Lesson by J Hinds

Learning Intentions:

  • To use my imagination to be creative

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

There are five different activities to choose from around the theme of pirates. You can choose to do these in any order and over several days.

To start the activity there is a song story that is approximately four minutes long to support your child with the activities.

You might want to revisit this video each day before starting another activity.

All the activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This is a fun and musical pirate story that leads on to lots of creative and role-play opportunities.

Click on the link below. Try and join in if you can.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: Treasure Map

  • Decide what your treasure is going to be. For example, favourite toy, a sweet or story book etc.
  • Hide your treasure in your chosen place.
  • Think about where you are starting from to search for the treasure. For example, kitchen, living room, bedroom etc.
  • Plan out your route to your treasure from your starting point. Remember to visit different places on the way to your treasure.
  • Now draw a map of the route from your starting point to your treasure. Don’t forget to label all the places they will pass along the way and of course the giant X at the end to mark where your treasure is. Alternatively, you could give instructions to a family member to help them find the treasure.

Activity 2: Message in a bottle

  • Create a message in the bottle. This could be a drawing of a desert island where treasure is buried or the pirate ship with all the pirates on or a poster asking for help to be rescued.
  • Don’t forget to put your message into an empty plastic bottle.

Activity 3: Make your own pirate ship

  • Using recyclable materials make your own pirate ship.

Activity 4: Roleplay

  • In your garden or a space indoors create a pirate’s treasure cave. You could use resources like a sheet over a table or a couple of chairs to create a secret space.
  • Your child can then decide what treasure they will have in their cave. They might like to make some things from recyclable materials or use favourite toys.
  • They might like to use some teddies or dolls as the pirates to help them with their roleplay.
  • They could even have a snack to picnic lunch in their pirate cave.

Activity 5: Pirate Flag

  • Create a pirate flag. You can decide what you want on your flag –  it could be a picture of a pirate, a ship or a pattern.
  • Make your flag by drawing your design onto paper. You could attach a straw for the flagpole.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I had fun learning about pirates.

Success criteria #2: I can use my imagination.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
