Lesson by Alison Jones

Learning Intentions:

  • To follow a recipe to make cheese straws.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This is a cooking activity that will need to be supervised by an adult. There is a short video to help set the scene for this activity. (Approximately four minutes)

The recipe is presented as a four page PowerPoint.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to make some cheese straws. You may not have had cheese straws before, but it is good to try new things. We are going to start by thinking about the different food groups watch the short video.

Click on the link below to watch ‘The 5 fabulous food groups’.

Can you remember the five food groups?

While you are making your cheese straws can you identify which food group each of the ingredients belongs to?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Making cheese straws

Requires adult support

Follow the recipe below to make your cheese straws. This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.

You will need a bowl, rolling pin, cheese grater and scales.

  • First and most importantly wash your hands.
  • Help your child to weigh out the ingredients.
  • Allow them to mix the ingredients together and roll out the dough. They can cut out the shapes using a round blade knife. (Adult supervision is required)
  • WARNING – The adult must put the cheese straws into the oven and take them out when they are cooked.
  • Take care because the tray and cheese straws will be hot when they first come out of the oven.
  • Don’t forget to get your child to help clear and wash up.

When your cheese straws are cooled, enjoy eating them perhaps with a glass of milk.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
