Lesson by Jennie Morris

Learning Intentions:

  • To listen carefully and move safely, matching appropriate actions to commands.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

For this activity you will only need to be online for the first five minutes while you listen to the story of Jack on the Beanstalk. (Approximately four minutes.)The main activity requires an open space to move around safely.  If you do not have an open space, perform the actions on the spot instead of moving around.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Jack and the Beanstalk is a traditional classic tale.  Listen to the story together and discuss the magic beans.  How many different types of beans do you eat? Explain that after the story you are going to play a game pretending to be different beans.  It’s very important to listen carefully to the different commands.

Click on the link below to listen to the story.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Make sure you have some space around you to move, ideally outdoors.

Look at the list of beans below and talk about the actions that go with each bean.

Call out the name of a bean for your child to do the action for that bean.

Repeat in a fun and energetic way.

You could change this game slightly by making it a Simon says game.

If you say “Simon says runner bean” your child does the actions for a runner bean.

But if you just say “runner bean” your child continues with the action they are doing until you say “Simon say…”

Don’t forget to log back on later and complete the self-assessment below.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can listen carefully to a story and instructions.

Success criteria #2:  I can carry out actions to different commands.

Success criteria #3:  I can move safely in a controlled environment.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
