Y1 > English > Language_Literacy_Communication > Reading > Phonics – Connect 4 Game

Lesson by Kirsty Smith

Learning Intentions:

  • To practise phonic sounds.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

There are two video clips approximately five minutes in total. These clips can be used daily to practise phonics.

There is also a game sheet which can be downloaded and printed or copied onto paper.

The main activity can be competed offline and requires adult support.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Click on the link below for Phase 3 Jolly Phonics:

  • Did your child recognise some of the sounds?

Listen to the Phase 4 Jolly Phonics songs and encourage your child to sing along:

  • What sounds did your child recognise?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Main activity

Please choose from below the phonics level most suitable for your child.

Either print out a copy of the sheet or write down the word and phoneme onto paper to play the game. You can use coins, e.g. silver and bronze, or counters, e.g. blue and red, for each player to use to connect four.

How to play:

  • Each choose a different colour crayon/coin/counter.
  • Take it in turns to pick a sound and read the word underneath.
  • If read correctly you can colour in or place a counter on the circle.
  • First one to connect 4 in their colour wins.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can use my knowledge of phonics to play a game.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
