Learning Intentions:
- To use standard measurements to weigh ingredients to make Easter nests.
- To write my own recipe for my friend to follow using a similar template.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
In this activity there are two video clips (approximately six minutes in total) to support the learning.
This activity requires adult support.
The main activity can be completed offline.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Today you are going to follow a recipe using standard measurements to make some Easter nests. Then you can have a go at writing a recipe of your own that your friends or family can follow.
Before you start, you might be wondering what ‘standard measurements’ mean. Well, when we are cooking, we use two types of standard measurements. We can weigh something using grams and kilograms or using millilitres and litres. This makes sure we have just the right amount of the ingredient we need. You will see we have added measurements on our ingredients list in our recipe. Once you have followed the instructions carefully, you can choose an item of your own to write a recipe for. This might be a cake, a pie or a drink. You could use the internet to help you.
Here is a short video which will introduce you to different standard measurements.
Now have a look at the BBC bitesize to learn more about reading scales.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – Making Easter nests
- Follow the recipe below with an adult for making Easter Nests. If you can’t find something on the ingredients list, don’t worry, you can choose an alternative.
- You will need to weigh the ingredients carefully to make sure you have just the right amount.
- Then follow the instructions step by step.
Activity 2 – Writing instructions
Key vocabulary for writing instructions
- Look carefully at the sentence starters used in the recipe. These are important words when writing instructions and you will be able to use these in your own instructions.
- Now write your own recipe.
- Remember, you need to include;
- a list of ingredients with measurements,
- a list of equipment,
- clear instructions.
You can record your recipe on J2e5, on a word document or write it on paper.
Encourage your friends or family to have a go at your recipe.
You could even pretend to be a food critic and write a review of your nests.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can accurately weigh ingredients for making Easter nests.
Success criteria #2: I can make Easter nests.
Success criteria #3: I can write a set of instructions for my own recipe.
Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
