Learning Intentions:

  • To observe and record changes in seeds.
  • To be able to communicate findings from an experiment.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity involves experimenting with growing seed(s). Sprouting seeds is exciting for children and gets them interested in changes in the natural world.

Your child will need to observe the seed(s) that they have planted over several days. The activity also requires some adult support.

To complete the activities, you will need the following resources:

Activity 1 Activity 2
Seeds, e.g. grass, cress, bean Seeds, e.g. grass, cress, bean
Card Soil
Kitchen paper Water
Plastic food bag Salt
Sellotape Sugar
Four containers
Measuring jug
Tablespoon

There is a three-minute story video for your child to listen to followed by two activities that can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Wow! What a great story. Did you find out how a seed grows into a plant? What facts do you remember from the story? Share the story and talk about your facts with your family.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1- Sprout houses (Requires some adult supervision)

Follow the instructions below to make your own Sprout house.

A great activity to develop your child’s understanding and curiosity of seed growth with your child getting involved as much as possible with your support. Have fun.

 

Activity 2 – Growing seeds experiment (Requires adult supervision)

Follow the instructions below to explore and investigate seed growth.

You will need to look at your seeds every day to observe any changes over the few days. You can record what you see with picture and/ or some sentences.

What happened to your seeds?

What changes did you notice?

Discuss with your family.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

 

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make and record my observations.

Success criteria #2:  I can communicate my findings.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
