Lesson by Leah Thomas

Learning Intentions:

  • To be able to carry out a simple experiment.
  • To be able to follow instructions.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is an instructional video, approximately two minutes.

The main activity can be completed offline.

You will need the following resources:

  • Sharpie pen (permanent marker)
  • Felt tip pens
  • Kitchen roll sheets
  • A plain white plate
  • Water
  • A jug

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This colourful science experiment is sure to entice your children’s exploration and curiosity. They will have the opportunity to practise their drawing, letter and/or number skills as they use their writing skills to create pictures and messages.

Start by watching the video below to learn how to do this colour magic experiment.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1:

Gather together the resources

  • Sharpie pen (permanent marker pen)
  • Felt tip pens
  • Kitchen roll sheets
  • A plain white plate
  • Water
  • A jug

Follow the instructions below:

  • Start by folding a sheet of kitchen roll in half.
  • On the top half of your tissue sheet, use the sharpie pen to draw a large, bold picture/ part of a word. You will need protection under the tissue (cardboard, plastic sheet) as the felts and sharpie will go through the tissue.
  • Draw the picture/word and when done, open up the kitchen towel. Inside you will see that the image has come through and is visible. Colour in this half of the picture with your normal felt tip pens.
  • Fold the tissue back so that the outline drawing is on top.
  • You will need a plate or a tray. It’s important that the plate or tray doesn’t have any patterns as this could stop the effectiveness of the experiment.
  • Using a jug/cup pour a shallow amount of water onto a plate/tray. With your kitchen towel folded over in half carefully place it into the water. Just like magic you will see the outline of your picture fill with beautiful colours.
  • Repeat this experiment with different pictures and words.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can complete a simple experiment.

Success criteria #2:  I can follow instructions.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
