Lesson by A Davy

Learning Intentions:

  • To know 2D shapes.
  • To be able to be creative with 2D shapes.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

For this activity there is a video (approximately ten minutes) your child will not need to watch all the video. Once they understand what is expected of them you can stop the video.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Resources needed:

  • A range of sizes of 2D shapes, e.g. circles, triangles, rectangles, squares and hexagons;  if you do not have different sizes of plastic shapes to draw around you can create your own using thin cardboard (for example, cereal boxes) and draw different shapes of different sizes and cut them out.
  • Paper, crayons, felt tip pens and black felt tip pen etc.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

In this activity you are going to create a 2D shape pattern using a range of 2D shapes and as many colours as you want. In the video only primary colours are used.

Start by watching the video ‘2D Shape Art’ below, you do not need to watch it all, only until you understand what the activity will be about:

Discuss the video:

  • What shapes were used?
  • What does overlapping mean?
  • What was used to define the edges of the shapes?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – 2D shape art

  • Make sure you have chosen a range of different size shapes (either plastic ones you can draw around or ones that you have made out of cardboard).
  • You will also need different colours to colour in the shapes (crayons, felt tip pens, etc) and a black felt tip to go around the shapes you have chosen.
  • First start your art by drawing around the first shape (you may want to use a pencil to create and then go around the edges with the black felt tip once you are happy).
  • Once you have drawn around all the shapes, remember to overlap you can then colour them in. Be creative.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I know 2D shapes.

Success criteria #2:  I can create 2D art.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Upload your work
