Learning Intentions:
I can measure liquids to create a mixed emotions potion.
Step 1: Read the activity overview
Today we will be learning all about capacity. This activity is linked to the story The Colour Monster. He is feeling all sorts of emotions today. We will be creating different coloured liquids to represent each emotion. Capacity is how much something can hold. You are going to create a potion following a list of measurements using millilitres and litres. You will need to use a measuring jug to measure your liquids accurately.
Step 2: Further details
First find 6 glasses or cups that you can use to hold your different emotions. Remember to check the measurements on the instruction sheet first so you can be sure it will hold enough. See the example. Label each glass/cup with the emotion. You can mix water with food colourings for each emotion. If you haven’t got food colouring at home you could use some paint and if you haven’t got paints, don’t worry, you can just use your imagination.
Step 3: Now watch this video
Watch the video below to remind yourselves of different standard measurements. We will be focusing on litres and millilitres today so remember to pay particular attention to that aspect of the video.
How many millilitres are in a litre? How many millilitres are in half a litre? How many millilitres are in a quarter of a litre?

Step 4: Here is your task!
- First fill up six different cups/ glasses with different coloured liquids to represent the emotions of the colour monster. Follow the measurements on the instruction sheet to measure the correct amount of each emotion to pour into your potion mixture. You could pour this into a large bowl or into a litre bottle if you have one in your home. Once you have poured all your emotions into your potion, be sure to stir it well to share the feeling of love and happiness to outweigh the others. Record the method you used to create your potion. Remember to use first, next, then, after that and finally.
- Once you have created your potion you could create a potion of your own. Write down the emotions and measurements for your family members to follow.
- Challenge yourself or your family member. You could take it in turns to see if you can give each other a measurement in millilitres and see if you can find the accurate reading on the jug. You could even record the results on a tally chart and make it a bit of a competition.
- Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or upload it to any of the available places below.
