Lesson by Lisa Davies

Learning Intentions:

  • To make a healthy lunchbox for Bob to keep him healthy with a balanced diet.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there are two videos, the first is a story (approximately six minutes) and is optional, the second is an instructional video (approximately two minutes) and needs to be viewed to support the learning.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to make a healthy lunchbox for Bob the ‘Man on the Moon’. Bob enjoys his lunch at half past 12 every day. Bob has a very important role looking after the moon, keeping it clean and tidy. To keep Bob well and healthy we need to make sure he has a balanced diet. To maintain a balanced diet he needs a combination of different foods.

In today’s session you will learn about the five food groups on the ‘Eat Well Guide’. If you haven’t already read the story of Bob ‘Man on the Moon’ you can listen to the story in the video below. This video is just under six minutes long.

Before we start today’s activities watch the video two minute video below about a healthy lifestyle.

Discuss with your child:

  • What does it mean to them to be healthy?
  • Why is it important to be healthy?
  • How can we stay healthy?

To maintain a balanced healthy diet it is recommended that we have a balance of five different food types. Today we are going to think about these food groups when making our healthy lunchbox for Bob to help keep him well.

Have a look at the ‘Eat Well Guide’ below and discuss the different food types.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Make your own ‘Eat Well Guide’. You can use a paper plate or a circular piece of paper.

  • Draw lines to divide the plate into five food groups and label each section, see example above.
  • What foods could you include in the groups that you might add to Bob’s lunchbox?

Activity 2 – Make a healthy lunchbox for Bob.

Think about what you are going to put in your healthy lunchbox for Bob. Remember he needs a balanced diet, so we don’t want to give him too many foods from one group.

Now you are going to make your healthy lunchbox for Bob, you can choose from one of the following:

  • Draw your items on a  paper plate
  • Draw food on a piece of paper and cut them out place them in an old box or container
  • Make some salt dough and make 3D foods for Bob(Salt dough recipe below)

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I know that there are five different food groups.

Success criteria #2:  I can make my own eat well guide.

Success criteria #3:  I can make a healthy lunch box for Bob.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
