Lesson by A Jones

Learning Intentions:

  • To follow a recipe to make cookies.
  • To use imagination for a toys’ tea party.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a story video approximately five minutes long. There is also a four-page PowerPoint with instructions for making the cookies.

This is a cooking activity that will need to be supervised by an adult.

The main activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Let’s start by listening to the story ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr

Today we are going to make some cookies just in case a tiger decides to come for tea. When you have made your cookies you might like to set up a pretend tea party with some of your toys.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Making cookies (Requires adult support)

Follow the recipe below to make your cookies for a tea party.  This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.

Gather together all the equipment and ingredients that you will need.

Equipment

  • A large mixing bowl
  • Kitchen scales
  • Fork
  • Baking tray
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • Butter
  • Caster sugar
  • Condensed milk
  • Self-raising flour
  • Sultanas or chocolate chips

Method

  1. First and most importantly wash your hands
  2. Help your child to weigh out the ingredients.
  3. Follow the recipe to make the cookies
  4. Allow them to mix the ingredients together and roll the cookie dough into balls
  5. WARNING – The adult must put the cookies into the oven and take them out when they are cooked.
  6. Take care because the tray and cookies will be hot when they first come out of the oven.
  7. Don’t forget to get your child to help clear and wash up.

Enjoy a cookie with a glass of milk in the company of your teddies or toys and share your cookies with your family!

Activity 2 – Tea party for your toys. Let’s pretend.

  • Decide which toys are going to come to your tea party.
  • If you have some toy food you might want to use this for your tea party.
  • If you have play dough you might want to make some play food.
  • Maybe draw some pictures or just use your imagination.

Think about what else you might need for your tea party, for example:

  • Cloth or towel to place on the floor to put your pretend food on
  • Toy tea set

Now you are ready to have your tea party with your toys!

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can follow a recipe to make cookies.

Success criteria #2:  I can use my imagination to have a tea party with my toys.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’
