Learning Intentions:

  • To follow a recipe to make ice cream.
  • To write a recipe for your own ice cream.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
This is a cooking activity that will need to be supervised by an adult. There is a short video to help set the scene for this activity. (Approximately seven minutes)

The recipe is presented as a six page PowerPoint.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Today we are going to make some ice cream. You will learn how to make strawberry ripple and chocolate chip ice cream, but once you know how to make the basic ice cream mix you can create your own flavours.Let’s start by listening to the story of ‘Curious George goes to an ice cream shop’ by Margaret Rey and Alan Shalleck.  Click on the link below.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activityActivity 1 – Making Ice Cream

Requires adult support

Follow the recipe below to make your ice cream. This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.

You will need a bowl, measuring jug, tin opener, a whisk hand or electric, teaspoon, tablespoon, and plastic containers for your ice cream.

  • First and most importantly wash your hands.
  • Measure out the ingredients.
  • Allow them to whisk the ingredients together if using a hand whisk you will probably want to take turns. If using an electric mixer you will need to help your child to ensure they are using it safely.
  • Let your child mix in any flavourings and spoon the mixture into the containers.
  • Put the ice cream into the freezer for four hours to set.
  • Don’t forget to get your child to help clear and wash up.

Enjoy eating your ice cream.

Now you know how to make the basic vanilla ice cream you can add any flavours you want.

Activity 2

If you could make any flavour of ice cream, what would it be?

Write a recipe for your ice cream.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:Success criteria #1:  I can follow a recipe to make ice cream.
