Learning Intentions:

  • To gain an understanding of minibeasts.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a short one minute video and an online quiz to support the learning.

Some activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This activity is an introduction to the world of minibeasts that are living in our environment.Start by watching the video on the link below:

 Watch the BBC bitesize video which will tell you all about them.

Having watched the video can you answer these questions?

  • Do you know what a minibeast is?
  • Can you name some of them?
  • Where do minibeasts live?

 

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity Activity 1 – Online quiz

Revisit the video link above, find the quiz on minibeasts below the video and complete the quiz.

Activity 2 – Outdoors minibeast hunt

Go on a minibeast hunt in your garden.

  • Remember to look under stones and wood, in the grass, on the flowers, in the soil and those that are flying around you.

You can use the minibeast tally chart to help you count how many of each you find. You can use the one below or make your own.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

 

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I know what minibeasts are.

Success criteria #2:  I can find minibeasts in the outdoors.

Success criteria #3:  I can complete a minibeast quiz.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 3

Make your own minibeasts out of recycling materials.

  • Think about what you could use for its legs, wings and eyes.
  • How many eyes and legs does it have?
  • You could use some natural materials from your garden like twigs and leaves.
