Learning Intentions:

  • To make up my own word problems using the number 12.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity links to the Picnic Tea activity.

This is a cooking activity that will need to be supervised by an adult.

There is a short video. (Approximately three minutes) The main activities can be completed offline.

The recipe is presented as a five page PowerPoint.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Let’s start by listening to the story Picnic by John Burningham

Click on the link below.

Today we are going to make some cupcakes for a picnic. When you have made your cupcakes you might like to set up a pretend picnic with some of your toys.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Making cupcakes

Requires adult support

Follow the recipe below to make your cupcakes for your teddy bears’ picnic. This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.

Gather together all the equipment and ingredients that you will need.

A large mixing bowl

Kitchen scales

Fork

Dessert spoon

Spatula

Ingredients

Margarine

Caster sugar

Self-raising flour

Cocoa powder

Eggs

Icing sugar

Cake sprinkles to decorate

  • First and most importantly wash your hands.
  • Help your child to weigh out the ingredients.
  • Follow the recipe below to make the cupcakes.
  • Allow them to mix the ingredients together and spoon into the cake cases.
  • WARNING – The adult must put the cupcakes into the oven and take them out when they are cooked.
  • Take care because the tray and cupcakes will be hot when they first come out of the oven.
  • Don’t forget to get your child to help clear and wash up.

Enjoy a cake with a glass of milk in the company of your teddies or toys and share your cakes with your family.

Activity 2 – sharing

The recipe that you have used makes 12 cupcakes, can you work out the answers to these word problems:

  • If you have 12 cupcakes and there are 3 of you at your picnic. How many cupcakes will you each have?
  • If you have 12 cupcakes and there are 4 of you at your picnic. How many cupcakes will you each have?
  • If you have 12 cupcakes and there are 2 of you at your picnic. How many cupcakes will you each have?
  • Can you make some of your own word problems using 12 cupcakes?

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
